Find your Stolen iPod or iPhone Serial Number in iTunes 9 in Windows
Do you need to retrieve your stolen ipod or iphone serial number in iTunes 9? Do you use Windows? If your reading this its a good chance that you have had your iPod or iPhone stolen. That sucks, sorry. So now you need to retrieve your serial number so you can report it to the police and post it on Stolen 911. If you have not noted the serial number somewhere else or kept the original packaging, you should be able to retrieve it in iTunes 9 or your Windows OS.
iTunes 9, in Windows 7, Vista, & XP – Run a diagnostic
- Choose Help
- Run Diagnostics
- check iPhone/iPod connectivity tests and/or iPhone/ipod touch sync test.
- Hit the Next button as directed. It will tell you to connect your iPod but just click next to run the tests.
- Finally you will see a screen, iTunes Diagnostics Complete.
- Scroll to the buttom and you will see the most recent device not currently connected. It will show you the serial number of your latest iPod device.
Now if you have several iPod devices, this technique might not allow you to see all of them. If you have another way to retrieve all the past connected devices in Windows 7, please feel free to share them below.

I’ve tried the above and it didn’t work for me. I have a Sony Vaio running Vista. I called Apple Support and they told me to do the following, which did work:
Go into iTunes
Press Control and Click on Help
While holding the Control Key, Select About iTunes from the drop-down menu
A window will pop up and the registration number will be at the bottom – Hit Space Bar to Pause the scrolling on your number
It worked for me – hopefully it works for you too! Be sure to call Apple at 1-800-676-2775 to file a report so that whoever stole it can’t use it!

Thank you Sarah. I have added your comment to the post.
We have multiple iPod Touche’s connected to one desktop running iTunes 9. To find the serial number for all Touches I did the following.
Go to “Edit” > “Preferences” and then select the “Devices” tab. When you position the mouse pointer over a device the serial number is shown.
You can find the Serial Numbers for all iPod’s that have been connected to your computer under iTunes 9.0 in a .xml file at the following location. (I am running Windows Vista):
c:\ProgramData\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPodDevices.xml
You will need to “open with” notepad, and then look for the entry “Serial Number.” The next xml segment will have the 11 character serial number in it.
For each iPod device that has been connected to your computer, there will be another “Serial Number” entry.

I hope this may help with all future IPhone losses. I know my sister had MobileMe on her Iphone and I think this is standard to most Iphones. It registers through your email address I believe.
I just got off the phone with Apple and the lady I was speaking to stated that if you go to Apple’s website, located the support section and go to Mobile me. There is an option to locate the IPhone as part of a GPS type locator through MobileMe. As long as it is in range of connection to the internet or Wi-Fi. Another option is if you cannot locate it for whatever reason you can do a remote wipe which will erase all of your information from it remotely.
This option is available on IPod Touches. There is a free 60 day trial to try it out and if it is desired to keep it is only $99.00 a year as of now. I say it is a service that is worth it because it is better then trying to replace the Touch or the IPhone.
I hope this helps.
